Fully completed application form - signed, stamped and dated by your HEI Certified copy of your birth certificate (and marriage certificate if using married name) Candidate registration fee (€150 as of 03/02/2015) You will then be issued with a Candidate Certificate with your candidate number or PIN and your training details. Postgraduate NMBI sends the application form to the Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) in Ireland. The HEIs will then distribute the forms to their students. To place your name on the Candidate Register, we will need a fully completed application form - signed, stamped and dated by your HEI.


When it comes to applying for a Nursing Job outside of the EU and EEA it is a bit more complicated when assessing the application. Unlike some applications from within the EU that get automatic recognition when applying. The process works by comparing your training directly against the NMBI’s set requirements and standard as well as this your application will need a full educational assessment. There are also a few other requirements you will need before making your application. To apply for registration you must: • Hold a current registration or licence to practice from the country you qualified • Have 5 years’ experience working as a Nurse • Meet language competence requirements • Have completed extra courses leading to registration as a first level Nurse, if you hold the following qualifications: state enrolled nurse, state certified nurse, licensed practical nurse, vocational nurse, nurse’s aide, and an associate degree (United States) If you meet the requirements you must complete the Registration Application Request Form and pay the assessment fee. Registration fee If you application is accepted you will also need to pay a registration fee . €145, if this is your first time registering with NMBI . €80, if you are already registered with NMBI If you are issued with a decision that you must undertake a period of adaptation and assessment to be eligible to join the Register, then you will only need to pay the registration fee if you successfully complete your adaptation and assessment placement. Assessment When the NMBI receive you basic documents they will assess your application. The assessment will be different, depending on which application group you belong to: Group 2 & 3 assessment Having checked all your basic documents and any further information received, they will now send your application to our Education Department for a full educational assessment The assessor will also calculate whether the theory and clinical content of your training programme meets requirements. Outcome of the assessment- You will then be sent a decision letter letting you know the following; Registered Refused registration Required to successfully complete a period of adaptation and assessment before registration Required to send further information so that we can make a final decision on your application If you are applying for registration with NMBI for the first time, then you need to pay an assessment fee of €350 which is non-refundable.


Over the past few months we have had a number of emails into Nurse Jobs Ireland from Nurses who have trained outside Ireland. If you have completed your training within the EU there is a number of directives set out. The EU Directive 2005/36/EC lists the dates that each country implemented the EU standards for the training of General Nurses and midwives. Automatic Recognition If you trained as a General Nurse or Midwife within the EU then your training may meet the automatic recognition route to registration. If you trained within Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland you are eligible for automatic registration as they have as these countries have implemented the directives. If you trained after the after the implementation date in your own country of training you are known as a Group 1 applicant. If you trained in the EU or EEA before the implementation date then you have acquired rights which means you may have the right to join the register based on your experience as a General Nurses or Midwife. If your training meets the Directive due to acquired rights, you are a Group 1 Applicant If you are a trained general nurse and you do not meet requirements for automatic recognition the NMBI can still consider your application. If your application is considered it will need to be educationally assessed. If your trained in the EU or EEA and your application needs a full educational assessment, you are a group 2 applicant. Did you train in a different area other than General Nursing or Midwifery? Unfortunately the EU does not have a set of agreed standards of training for divisions other than general nursing and midwifery. The NMBI will consider your application under the general system terms of the Directive. Your application will be educationally assessed. Your training will be compared against the requirements and standards that NMBI have set up for that division. If you trained in the following areas your application will be need further educational assessment; • Children’s Nurse • Nurse prescriber • Psychiatric Nurse • Intellectual Disability Nurse • Nurse Tutor


Follow these guidelines and checks to remember before you go for your nurse job interview. The first thing you need is your ABA pin so make sure you register for this as soon as you are applicable to as they can take a couple of weeks to come through. All nurse vacancies in Ireland require you to be fully registered with An Bord Altranas. When going for jobs in nursing you need certain items for your interview under the HIQA guidelines. All nurses need three references when going for an interview and one of those must be your current or last employer. If you are a graduate nurse you can use references from your lecturers from your school of nursing and references from a part time job you may have had during college. If you are putting down your placements as a reference then you must ensure that you secure a reference with your Clinical Nurse Manager or Director of Nursing before you finish. When nurses go for their first nursing jobs after college they rely on their references from placements. There can be problems with these references because when the new employer rings the vicinity there is no records kept there for the nurses on placement so the employers cannot secure a reference. What Nurse Jobs Ireland suggests is making sure you get a written reference at the end of your placement. If you are currently a student nurse make sure you get your references at the end of your placements. If you have not secured references don’t worry as nursing jobs accept other types of references for graduates.
